Was the Space Shuttle Really Worth It?

Was the space mission really worth all that money? what has it really achieved? Is man better off on earth for the vast amounts of money invested into the years of space travel?
Did man really benefit on earth for all the moon missions? and is there another reason for them all these years really being up there? what have they and at present are they really doing?
