Simply my building military bases. Before we had the British Empire and to control its colonies it settled in these countries, some still part of the British Commonwealth.
America however does it differently this time by threats and force of military power.
Today you don't need to take over a country completely, all you do is have solid bases there which provides the command centres for the US govt back home in Washington
